Lake Chelan Hospital's Board introduces resolution to hire Kevin Abel as permanent CEO
Jan 28, 2010
Chelan, WA, January 26, 2010 – The Lake Chelan Community Hospital (LCCH) Board of Commissioners introduced a resolution at the January 26 regular board meeting to hire LCCH interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Kevin Abel as the hospital’s permanent CEO. The Board will vote on the final resolution at the next regular meeting February 23.

Abel has filled the dual role of LCCH Interim CEO and CFO since June 2009.

“We tested Kevin for six months while he served as our interim CEO,” said David Dickes, LCCH Board Vice President. “His references cited his experience in strategic planning, healthcare operations, financial management, organizational behavior and major construction projects leading to significant improvements in his previous organizations.

“We have seen the same level of results here in the last six months, and I believe he is the right person to lead our hospital district into the future.”

Abel came to LCCH as CFO in February 2009. Before that, he most recently worked for Bend, Oregon’s Cascade Healthcare Community, which has three hospitals, including a 261-bed facility and a 25-bed critical access hospital. While a Controller at Cascade Healthcare, he initiated their budget process, implemented a cost accounting system and integrated it into the organization’s strategic planning process, developed a construction budget for expansion projects and assisted with the development of an $8.5 million financial turnaround plan.

Abel also worked four years at Cascade Healthcare as Director of Material and Biomedical Services, managing more than $50 million in annual supply expenses.

In addition to having a broad range of healthcare management experience, Abel has proven himself at LCCH with strong financial and leadership skills, said Mary Pat Scofield, LCCH Board President.

“Kevin Abel’s first 11 months with LCCH have been character building and testing,” added Dr. John Kremer, LCCH Chief Medical Director. “Through it all, he has never backed away from anything asked of him. I see him as a thoughtful and well-educated man who is calm, sincere and willing to work. I look forward to working with him in the years to come and investing in the future of the Lake Chelan Hospital and our community.”

Abel has a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters of Education from Seattle University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Illinois and enjoys working for non-profit organizations, where he feels he can best help the community. A new member of the Lake Chelan Rotary, Abel and his wife Chris have three children and live in Chelan.

A search for a new hospital CFO will begin after the February board meeting.
